Children's Book Illustration

Character Design and Animation

This is a children's storybook illustration created by artist Nigel Spaven of Spaven Art Ltd, entitled 'Rabbit Family'. A family of rabbits dressed in hobbit type clothing, including grandpa, grandma, ma and pa, eldest son and his young sister and brother who are playing with their pet cat. There is also a rabbit wizard dressed in long purple coat and red waistcoat, waving his green top hat. He has a penny whistle in his top pocket and is holding a wooden staff with shining orb at the top. The eldest son has a red squirrel on his shoulder. The colours of the illustration are vivid and dynamic with a unique style.

Colourful storybook illustration by artist Nigel Spaven entitled ‘Faery Glen in Winter’. The illustration shows a snowy hillside dotted with strange faery houses in all shapes and sizes. It is nighttime with full moon and lanterns lighting up the small tracks between the houses. Some faeries are dancing around a fire while others ride horsedrawn sleighs on the frozen loch, or slide down the frozen stream which originates from a waterfall in the distant mountains.

There is an opening in the main trunk showing a magical pool and a swirl of yellow light shooting out of the opening and around the branches. Very colourful and unusual toadstool houses with windows and doors in the stems are hidden in the long grass beneath the old oak tree. There is a robin sitting on a branch among the leaves. There are bubbles from a bubble flower floating around. The colours of the illustration are vivid and dynamic with a unique style.

The illustration depicts eccentric scientist Boris the Bug, dressed in leather biker jacket and non-matching shoes, working in a chaotic underwater cave laboratory. There is a large round window, fish and a stingray can be seen amongst the coral of the seabed. From the window the laboratory opens inwards with curved shelving against the walls with potted herbs, bottles, jars of every colour and shape on the shelves (odours rise from some). A microscope and bubbling chemistry apparatus adorn a rickety table alongside a half-eaten sandwich and test tubes containing brightly coloured potions. A pc desk is covered in books and a teapot full of pens, plus a toothbrush and tube of glue. The colours of the illustration are vivid and dynamic with a unique style.

The illustration depicts four young girls who are warrior friends preparing to do battle with invading mosquitoes. Their village can be seen in the distance. They wait, hidden amongst trees, keeping a look-out along the shoreline. They wear armour made from woven reed leaves and carry horn shaped containers which are full of anti-mosquito potions. The colours of the illustration are vivid and dynamic with a unique style.
